A child dies from a preventable waterborne illness once every 10 seconds. 76 million people will die from preventable water-related illnesses between now and 2020. The world's population has tripled in the last century. Meanwhile, water use has increased sixfold, drying up rivers and ravaging about half the world's wetlands. World wide demand for water is doubling every 21 years. By 2025, the world must increase its water supply by 22% in order to meet its needs. The Solution: If the problem is an increasing demand for water and the lack of supply to meet this demand, well then, conservation is the solution. As far as the United States is concerned, the average citizen uses 142 liters of drinking quality water each day. Of this amount, 50 per cent is flushed down the toilet! As Christians, the question we must ask ourselves is: If there is not enough water to meet all of our needs, and people are actually dying daily from lack of water, how can we continue wasting so much clean drinking water just to flush our waste? Well, we don't have to continue wasting this water! Click here to learn about the Grey Water Recycling System, which consists of just a couple simple steps to allow you to use recycled sink water to flush your toilets. This will cut your daily water consumption in half! And please keep in mind, there is no harm in making these changes. Your sink and toilet will still function in the conventional way. In the meantime, here are several other simple steps you can take to conserve more water during the course of your day (Thanks to The Green Book by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostigen for the majority of these ideas):
Don't pre-rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwater. Also, run full loads in the dishwasher. Do both and you'll save up to 20 gallons of waater per dish load, or 7,300 gallons over a year. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. You'll conserve up to 5 gallons of water per day. Flush the toilet just one less time a day. Along with the Grey Water Recycling System mentioned above, if you flush just one less time a day, you will save approximately 4.5 gallons of water a day - as much water as the average person in Africa uses for a whole day of drinking, cooking, bathing, and cleaning. Also, if you place an object (such as a brick or a full bottle of water) in the tank of your toilet, it will take less water to fill up the tank, and your toilet will use less water per flush. Plug the drain in the tub before turning on the water when you take a bath. The average bathtub faucet flows 3-5 gallons of water per minute. Just one less gallon of water used per person in the United States per day can add up to more than one hundred billion gallons per year. Wash your car in a commercial car wash as opposed to washing it yourself. Commercial car washes not only use significantly less water per wash - up to 100 gallons less - but they often recycle and reuse rinse water. Better yet... who cares if your car is a little dirty? There's absolutely no need to wash your car that often! When staying in a hotel, use the same linens and towels in your room throughout your stay. You probably don't change your sheets and towels every day at home, so why do it while you're away? The average hotel room consumes more than 200 gallons of water per day. Trimming the amount of water used by washing sheets and towels can save up to 40% of a hotel's water use.
